Esso Ethos+™ Renewable Diesel is a high-performance alternative to petroleum diesel, designed to help lower carbon intensity2 and deliver dependable performance year-round3,4.
Renewable diesel is different from biodiesel blends.
Image is illustrative and depicts the canola plant, which is a possible feedstock pathway used in production.
Renewable diesel is produced from renewable feedstocks using a refining process that creates a fuel with properties that closely match petroleum diesel, allowing it to be used as a drop-in fuel1 in existing diesel engines. It is distinct from biodiesel (FAME), which is also produced from renewable feedstocks but through a different process, resulting in different fuel characteristics that often require lower blend levels to maintain similar performance to petroleum diesel.
Why choose Esso Ethos+™ Renewable Diesel?
While use of renewable diesel can help lower carbon intensity2 in existing diesel engines1, Esso Ethos+™ Renewable Diesel is formulated and quality-controlled to perform year-round in Canadian conditions3, with additive technology that helps maintain engine performance4.
Frequently asked questions.
Renewable diesel is hydrotreated from bio-feedstocks, like vegetable oils. These feedstocks are converted into a paraffinic mixture similar to petroleum diesel. Biodiesel, also known as fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), can use the same feedstocks but is produced from a process known as transesterification. FAME is chemically different from petroleum diesel, and due to this is often used as a blendstock.
Esso Ethos+™ Renewable Diesel is made in Canada, and unlike most imported renewable diesel, is engineered to meet Canadian seasonal cloud points3, enabling year-round use. It also includes diesel performance additives to restore engine power and responsiveness by helping clean and prevent injector deposits.4
Yes, renewable diesel as a drop-in fuel can be used in existing diesel equipment.1
As a drop-in fuel, renewable diesel is approved by many OEMs. We recommend confirming with your vehicle owner manual.1
Esso Ethos+™ Renewable Diesel is produced to meet or exceed Canadian seasonal cloud points3 for the regions in which it is supplied.
No, renewable diesel should be stored and handled in accordance with petroleum diesel practices.
Yes, renewable diesel can be blended with petroleum diesel to meet renewable content ratio objectives. Esso Ethos+™ Renewable Diesel is available in a variety of blend options. Blend options by location may vary.
Carbon intensity values depend on the regulatory or reporting being used, and these systems vary by region in how they calculate and certify carbon intensity.2 We work directly with customers to provide the appropriate information for your specific requirements.
1. Esso Ethos+™ Renewable Diesel can be used in most modern diesel engines without modifying the engine or blending with conventional petroleum diesel. Suitable for use in diesel engines certified to use CAN/CGSB 3.520, ASTM D975 and EN15940 specifications fuel. Check the appendix of the Land Fuel White Paper for compatibility details specific to your vehicle's manufacturer, model, engine, application, and emission level. The proper blend for equipment should be evaluated based on the recommendations of the equipment OEMs. Verify fuel compatibility with your vehicle owner’s manual or by contacting your vehicle manufacturer.
2. Life cycle carbon intensity (CI) compared to petroleum diesel fuel without renewable or biodiesel content (R0 or B0), and without detergent additive, using the Government of Canada Fuel Life Cycle Assessment Model and/or GHGenius model as per Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions of British Columbia. Esso Ethos+™ Renewable Diesel CI values are estimated by ExxonMobil and its affiliates, including Imperial Oil, in accordance with the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) and/or British Columbia Low Carbon Fuel Standard (BC LCFS), respectively. Actual life cycle CI of the final product may vary.
3. Cold flow operability of renewable diesel is processing dependent. Always check that the properties of renewable diesel meet seasonal temperature requirements as purchased.
4. Applies to Esso Ethos+™ Renewable Diesel. Benefits compared to renewable diesel without detergent additive, with the same level of renewable content. Actual results will vary depending on factors such as vehicle/engine type, driving style, diesel fuel previously used, and other factors. Concentration and availability of our proprietary additive package may vary based upon factors beyond our control.
