Horn River

Developing unconventional natural gas, such as our promising Horn River shale gas play in northeast British Columbia, is a key opportunity for Imperial to add natural gas production over the long term. 

To date, along with ExxonMobil Canada, we have acquired more than 340,000 net acres – one of the largest lease holdings in this frontier exploration area where natural gas is trapped in shale rock. We are currently conducting exploration work to test the potential of the area and expect to start production from a multi-well pad in 2012.

Imperial is a member of the Horn River Basin Producers Group. As part of this group, we work with other area producers, the British Columbia government and First Nations to ensure responsible development.

We are also committed to protecting the environment in the Horn River Basin through initiatives such as using pre-existing logging roads and seismic cutlines to access most of our winter drilling locations, and have implemented horizontal drilling on a multi-well pad to minimize surface disturbance.
